MSc Musculoskeletal Medicine

This programme is delivered by the Society of Musculoskeletal Medicine and Queen Margaret University.  The Society of Musculoskeletal Medicine (SOMM) was formed in 1979 and is a registered charity. 
 
The aim of the Society is to provide courses of high educational quality to enable physiotherapists and medical practitioners to develop competence in diagnosis and effective treatment in musculoskeletal medicine.

Musculoskeletal medicine is the examination, diagnosis and non-surgical treatment of disorders of the musculoskeletal system.

This programme aims to enable postgraduate physiotherapists and medical practitioners to develop a deeper understanding of musculoskeletal medicine as well as their professional and personal skills, to be able to contribute to the development of the specialism and to improve treatment outcomes.

Programme structure

To enter the programme, learners must have completed the SOMM Foundation in Musculoskeletal Medicine (60 credits at SCQF Level 11) or an equivalent programme.

Core modules:

  • Research Methods - 20 credits
  • Dissertation - 60 credits

  • Theory and Practice of Injection Therapy
  • Advancing Practice in Musculoskeletal Medicine
  • Developing Professional Practice
  • Special Tests in Musculoskeletal Examination
  • Preparation for Teaching Musculoskeletal Medicine

Placements - Placement opportunities are not provided. Students must provide evidence of their ability to practise the musculoskeletal medicine approach through the duration of the programme, as far as is practicable, prior to registration. 听

Admission criteria

Students wishing to undertake the MSc Musculoskeletal Medicine programme require:

  • A relevant professional physiotherapy (e.g. BSc (Hons) Physiotherapy) or medical qualification
  • Registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) or General Medical Council (GMC). Students based within the European Economic Area (EEA) and international students will need to provide evidence of registration with their home organisation, as appropriate to their professional qualification.
  • Evidence of opportunities to practise musculoskeletal medicine.
  • Successful completion of all of the assessment components of the core Foundation in Musculoskeletal Medicine module (60 SCQF Level 11 credits) OR successful completion of an equivalent programme provided by other recognised orthopaedic/musculoskeletal medicine organisations

For applicants who are non-native English language speakers, The following language requirements should normally be met:

  • International English Language Testing System - IELTS >6.5 (no less than 6.0 in any element) or equivalent; or
  • Norwegian Vitnemal Videregaende Opplaering - 听VVO: If grades achieved 4-5 achieved in English; or
  • A previous undergraduate or postgraduate degree level study of at least 2 years duration which has been fully taught and assessed in English, completed within the past 5 years.
