Your Business Consultancy in Practice (BCiP) project

Tell us a bit about your BCiP Project brief...

My project is quite聽complex,聽so I am working on it a team聽with other two students. The project聽聽

is about聽how to revive聽the hospitality industry聽after the Covid-19 pandemic and consists of three major parts, which are:聽

  • Setting up a聽hospitality聽innovations and crisis management center in Edinburgh聽
  • Introducing a general manager degree at 草莓社区聽(hotel-specific)聽
  • Setting up a聽global聽annual聽hospitality conference in Edinburgh.聽聽

I am responsible for the last section of the project, which is designing the global conference.聽Some of my responsibilities聽include:聽securing聽the location聽for the conference, designing聽the聽conference聽programme,聽identifying and recruiting聽speakers, researching聽current topics which need to be discussed, researching聽accommodation for the delegates and聽pricing the event up.聽聽聽

What is your timeframe for delivering the project?聽

Our first meeting with the client was in October聽2020聽and I started researching the topic immediately after. All three students in my team will have finished their research by the end of July聽2021聽and we will present it to the client then.聽

Your experience of the project

What were your biggest highlights鈥痺hilst working on the BCiP project?聽

It was my first time working for an actual client so seeing聽that聽I was able to do聽it, and to do it well,聽was really motivating for me. Also, being a team leader was a great learning experience.聽I鈥檝e聽enjoyed the added responsibility of organising meetings聽and setting up deadlines and making sure everybody聽follows.聽聽聽

What challenges did you encounter?聽

What I found most challenging was working on such a big and important project with no previous experience. I was very unsure about whether I could聽pull it off聽or not which made me worried pretty much all throughout the project while at the same time I had to look confident in front of the client and make it seem like I knew what I was doing.聽Unlike with any聽University assignment, I had no guidelines to follow and had to rely on my own understanding of the task and decide聽myself what to research which is something I聽wasn鈥檛聽used to.聽聽

What do you feel you learned most from this project聽personally and professionally?聽

One of the biggest things聽I got from this project聽was聽confidence in my own skills. In September I wouldn鈥檛 have believed I鈥檇 be聽able聽to pull聽off聽a project like聽this聽but I did and I鈥檓聽really proud聽of what I鈥檝e聽achieved.聽Also dealing with the client was a great preparation for my future career because I improved a lot in pitching ideas, communication, time management and setting and adhering to deadlines.聽聽

What support did you have on the project?聽

An advantage of working in a team was that we could always go聽to each other for help聽and discuss whatever was on our mind 鈥 even if it meant just panicking together most of the time. But聽it鈥檚聽true that running ideas by another student rather than going straight to the client or聽the聽supervisor was very helpful and a bit less scary too. Other than that, my supervisor was extremely聽helpful聽and the client was happy to meet up too, even though the聽five聽hour聽time difference between聽them聽and us聽made聽it a bit challenging聽at first.聽

Your next steps...

Has this project helped you decide on a future career choice?聽

Not necessarily, but I'm really glad I did it. I have years of experience of working in hospitality and it is something I enjoy but this was my first time working 鈥榖ehind the scenes鈥 on organising an event rather than working at it which was really interesting. It probably isn鈥檛 the area I want to work in in the future but I am glad I explored this area of the industry and that I gained experience in it and it will no doubt come in handy at some point in the future.聽

What advice would you share with anyone聽thinking about applying for聽this PG course?聽

I鈥檇聽say just do it. I found all our classes very interesting even though most of them were unfortunately done remotely聽due to the pandemic. When I applied for this聽course聽I wasn鈥檛 even considering doing聽BCiP聽and wanted to do a dissertation because I knew it would be a lot easier for me and I already knew how to do it thanks to my undergrad. However,聽I鈥檓聽now聽really grateful聽I decided to challenge myself and take on the project because I learnt a lot from it.聽聽

So聽my advice would聽be:聽don鈥檛 be scared to do the project, it will give you so much more than a dissertation and it will look a hundred times better on your CV.聽

One of the biggest things I got from this project was confidence in my own skills. In September I wouldn鈥檛 have believed I鈥檇 be able to pull off a project like this but I did and I鈥檓 really proud of what I鈥檝e achieved.
